New Year’s Resolution – Avoid These 4 Mistakes If You’re Trying To Lose Weight!

It’s ALMOST January. The time where new year resolutioners will say:

“New year, new me”

“Time to start on my diet”

“I need to get back on my diet”

Yet most people start strong with weight loss, fitness, and healthy eating goals but it doesn’t last. Why is that?

Just reading some stuff from google search, I have found that the majority (80-90%) of new year’s resolutions FAIL to keep up with their intention of losing weight, going to gym – or just eating better in general.

In this article, I’m going to tell you, 4 MOST common pitfalls I’ve observed with their nutrition, fitness, or health goals so that YOU can prevent them from happening.

  1. Unrealistic expectations. This can mean literally everything. This could mean losing weight of 30 lbs in 2 months. This could mean putting on 20 lbs of muscle in 3 months. By setting yourself up for unrealistic expectations, you have already set yourself up for failure because the goal is basically impossible. A more realistic goal are simple baby steps that are super easy for you to do but also a little challenging. This could mean just hitting the gym 2x a week. This could also mean walking 3 times a week. This can also mean eating salad with protein for lunch 4 times a week. These goals look easy but they ADD up when done up over time.
  2. Focusing on the end goal, not the HOW. This means not figuring out HOW to achieve your goal. If you just say I want to lose 30 lbs by March, but don’t have a plan on how to do it, you’ll probably going to fail pretty fast, especially if you have tried losing weight over and over again. A better focus would be working backwards. Figuring out HOW you’re going to lose 30 lbs by March. What is it going to take? Will it take meal planning on Sundays? Will it take exercising 4 days a week. Will it take 30 minutes of walking on the weekends? By figuring out HOW you’re going to achieve your goal, you can work backwards on the HOW.
  3. Not asking for help. “This time it will be different!” Says you. What is different this time? New year? Motivation? If you keep doing the same thing over and over again, you’ll end up with the same thing over and over again. What change is it this time that will be different? Better? As a Registered Dietitian here in Concord, CA, I can tell you that a lot of my clients do better when they ask for help – when it comes to weight loss, building muscle, or just wanting to eat better overall. I give my clients the support and the accountability they need so that they can sustainably lose weight, keep it off, feel great, without going on any fad diets that others fall on.
  4. Relying only on motivation. Let’s face it. Motivation is just part of the equation. To truly accomplish your goals, You must have more than motivation. Discipline and consistency to get there also matters. Who and what you surround yourself with matters too. How do you plan on getting consistent? This is where I come in. As someone that helps clients achieve their goals, I help plan out clients goals by giving them step by step plans on how to achieve their goal. As a Registered Dietitian that helps clients lose weight, feel better, and help them have more energy, I guide my clients on the HOW and WHAT they should be focusing on their nutrition goals.
