What is the Best Weight Loss Diet?
I often get questions like these on a weekly basis. Drives clients mad asking “What is the best weight loss diet?”
Clients wanting to find out what is the “best” so that they can get the “best” results.
It makes sense – plenty of people have been burned by trying to diet and lose and it only makes sense to want to know what is the fastest and best way to get to their goal.
But the “best” isn’t really the best – like what you might think.
The Best – it’s not what you think.
The BEST diet is the one you CAN stick to.
The one that fits YOU.
The one that fits your needs AND goals.
With that being said, the “best” is really just about fine tuning what works for you and what doesn’t work for you.
Also considering what is SUSTAINABLE in the long run. Think forever.
What To LOOK For a “Diet”
With this in mind, there are PRINCIPLES or strategies on what to think about or what to not think about when it comes to the best diet:
- Does it meet your goals? Whatever your goals are – weight loss, controlling your blood sugar, managing your blood pressure, or building muscle, your diet needs to be closely aligned with your goals.
- Does it include the foods you enjoy?
- Does it include nourishing foods? By nourishing – I mean including fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, different types of carbs like rice or pasta
- Is it sustainable? Let’s face it – the majority of fad diets out there simply aren’t sustainable. The most important rule of keeping up with your nutrition is that it NEEDS to be sustainable. If it’s not sustainable, you will have a hard time keeping up with it in the long run.
- Peace of mind – aka not feeling guilty. Let’s face it – when we eat foods that we’re not “suppose” to have we feel guilty. By having a good relationship with food and not labeling it as “good” or “bad” we can begin to have that peace of mind. Peace of mind that there is no such thing as “good” or “bad” food. Everything you eat is within context.
What about the DIETS that don’t work?
What doesn’t work is usually the OPPOSITE of what I just wrote above – it doesn’t meet your goals, it doesn’t have any foods you enjoy and the other I mentioned.
Keep in mind that the “diet” is a balancing act of what does work. Which is why it’s important to work with a dietitian to see how all can fit and what you should prioritize.
To summarize what is the best weight loss diet:
- There is no ONE best diet. Best diet is the one that you can stick to forever
- It needs to meet ALL of those mentioned above
- What works for others may not work for you
- Stay away from fad diets. If it’s too good to be true – it probably is.
